Welsh Woodland Creation Funding Programmes Open for Applications

Applications are being accepted by two programmes designed to provide financial support to land managers in Wales who are planting new woodland areas.

Financial support is available to farmers and other land managers in Wales to fund tree planting and fencing to enable the creation of new woodland areas.

The Woodland Creation Grant scheme and the Small Grants – Woodland Creation scheme are administered by Rural Payments Wales (RPW) on behalf of Welsh Government, with an indicative budget allocation for the Autumn 2022 application period of £1 million.

  • The Woodland Creation Grant scheme is accepting applications from land managers who have a woodland creation plan, approved by the Welsh Government, following successful application to either the Woodland Creation Pilot Planning scheme or Woodland Creation Planning scheme. The minimum area for an application is 0.25ha of approved planting and there is no maximum area. Funding is available for four woodland categories. Applicants can also claim funding for fencing at a rate of £5.56/metre.
  • The Small Grants – Woodland Creation scheme is accepting applications from land managers to encourage planting of small areas of trees on land which is agriculturally improved or of low environmental value. Funding is available for planting areas between 0.1ha and 1.99ha. Funding can support tree planting to create shelterwoods, alongside watercourses, and in field corners or small fields for stock shelter, biodiversity and woodfuel. The scheme also offers 12 years of payments for Maintenance and Premium payment in respect of the new planting.

Those applying for funding in the Autumn 2022 application period are required to complete their new planting and capital works and claim for all capital works by 31 March 2023.

The Autumn 2022 deadline for applications is 14 October 2022.
