New Round of IUK’s Biomedical Catalyst Industry-led R&D Competition

UK businesses and research and technology organisations, working alone or with partners, can apply for funding to develop innovative solutions to health and healthcare challenges.

Through the Biomedical Catalyst Competition, Innovate UK (IUK) is investing in projects to support businesses developing innovative health or healthcare-focused products, technologies and processes.

Projects can focus on:

  • Disease prevention and proactive management of health and chronic conditions.
  • Earlier and better detection and diagnosis of disease, leading to better patient outcomes.
  • Tailored treatments that either change the underlying disease or offer potential cures.
  • Transforming the delivery of healthcare.
  • The development of digital health technologies.

The Industry-led R&D stream of the Biomedical Catalyst supports pre-market R&D projects. Applicants must be able to demonstrate existing evidence of commercial and technical feasibility.

Up to £25 million has been allocated to fund industrial research projects and experimental development projects, focusing on any health or healthcare sector or discipline. Funding will be in the form of a grant. A project’s total costs must be between £150,000 and £4 million. The total grant cannot exceed £2 million. A minimum of 50% of the total eligible project costs must be incurred by SME(s).

The competition is open to single applicants and collaborations. To lead a project or work alone the organisation must be a UK registered micro, small or medium-sized enterprise (SME). To collaborate with the lead, the organisation must be a UK registered business of any size, academic institution, research and technology organisation (RTO), charity, not-for-profit, or public sector organisation. Projects must be carried out in the UK.

The competition opens on 4 January 2023. The deadline for applications is 1 March 2023.
