New Capacity Building Programme for Community Organisations in Disadvantaged Areas of Wales

A new programme designed to support community anchor organisations in areas of Wales with low levels of community assets is inviting applications.

Funding and a programme of support are available to local community organisations in designated areas of Wales with low levels of community assets, to help them become stronger and better placed to face future challenges.

The Community Anchor Development Programme is an initiative of Building Communities Trust, an independent trust working with disadvantaged communities in Wales. The programme offers participants flexible funding of up to £150,000 per organisation over four years between 2024-2028, and the chance to take part in a learning programme with similar organisations.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be a registered charity or other not for profit organisation, including constituted community groups.
  • Be based in one of the eligible locations in which the Community Anchor Development Programme is being delivered. Details of eligible locations can be checked on the BCT website.
  • Be, or aspire to become, a ‘community anchor organisation’ as defined by BCT. These organisations are multi-purpose, with a concern for a range of local actions in the community.

It is anticipated that the Community Anchor Development Programme will be able to fund 6-10 organisations. The programme is designed for participants to develop their capacity according to their specific needs, whether through income generation, asset development, business planning, governance, communication, or broader community engagement.

The programme is due to start in February 2024. Organisations seeking support from Building Communities Trust in developing their application are required to contact BCT by 6 October 2023.

The deadline for applications is 22 December 2023.
