New Round of £2m Air Quality Grants Programme

Defra’s Air Quality Programme provides grants to English local authorities to help support their air quality management duties under the Environment Act 1995.

Over £61 million has been awarded through the programme since it was launched in 1997.

The 2019/20 funding round is now open to applications.

In particular, Defra are looking for applications with projects designed to:

provide air quality benefits soon (in next 1 to 2 years)

develop solutions over the longer term by increasing awareness and encouraging behaviour change.

In previous funding rounds, applicants have been awarded funding to install electric vehicle charging points, improve cycling infrastructure and develop local online air quality resources.

Local authorities may submit an application in partnership with one or more other eligible authorities. When doing so one authority should be indicated as the lead authority for the project.

There are no set funding amounts. A guide price for allocations is for projects between £10,000 and £60,000 in total but applications for amounts outside this range will be accepted for consideration.
