Nesta Launches AI for Good Fund to Address Social Challenges in Scotland

Through the AI for Good Fund, Nesta wishes to identify and support innovative projects that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help people and communities across Scotland tackle some of the biggest societal challenges. The scheme aims to explore the social benefits of machine learning and open up public discourse around the positive and ethical uses of this technology.

Nesta is particularly keen to explore the potential to transform the way that systems and services are provided across all areas of society, such as local and national government, science, health, education, arts, climate action, transport, manufacturing, emergency services, academia and research.

From an overall budget of £100,000, the programme will award between five and ten grants of between £15,000 and £20,000. Winners will be profiled across Nesta’s channels, local and national media to support their work.

Applications are invited from organisations of all sizes and sectors undertaking activities in Scotland. Students, academics, start-up businesses, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and public and third sector bodies that are applying AI to improve social outcomes will all qualify.

Entries must be able to articulate how their idea contributes to ‘social good’. The project, research or initiative must be more than a concept or a research question – but does not need to be complete or fully demonstrable.

Applications must be submitted by midday on Friday 10 January 2020.
