New Call Topics Launch under Horizon 2020

 

The Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials funding programme is a part of the Societal Challenges pillar of Horizon 2020, which focuses on bringing together a critical mass of resources and knowledge in order to address specific challenges. The focus of this theme is on investing in innovation for a green economy.

A total of 17 Call Topics have launched under two separate Calls of this pillar. These Calls and their respective Topics are as follows:

Greening the Economy in Line with the Sustainable Development Goals

This call focuses on moving to a greener, more resource efficient and climate-resilient economy in sync with the natural environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The following 13 Topics have been launched in support of this Call:

Innovation Actions:

  • CE-SC5-04-2019: Building a water-smart economy and society. Budget: €72 million.
  • CE-SC5-07-2018-2019-2020: Raw materials innovation for the circular economy: sustainable processing, reuse, recycling and recovery schemes. Budget: €30 million.
  • SC5-10-2019-2020: Raw materials innovation actions: exploration and Earth observation in support of sustainable mining. Budget: €20 million.
  • SC5-14-2019: Visionary and integrated solutions to improve well-being and health in cities. Budget: €43 million.
  • SC5-16-2019: Development of commercial activities and services through the use of GEOSS and Copernicus data. Budget: €15 million.
  • SC5-20-2019: Transforming historic urban areas and/or cultural landscapes into hubs of entrepreneurship and social and cultural integration. Budget: €25 million.

RIA Research and Innovation action:

  • SC5-09-2018-2019: New solutions for the sustainable production of raw materials. Budget: €30 million.
  • SC5-13-2018-2019: Strengthening international cooperation on sustainable urbanisation: nature-based solutions for restoration and rehabilitation of urban ecosystems. Budget: €10 million.

Coordination and Support Actions:

  • CE-SC5-08-2018-2019-2020: Raw materials policy support actions for the circular economy. Budget: €3 million.
  • SC5-16-2019: Development of commercial activities and services through the use of GEOSS and Copernicus data. Budget: €1 million.
  • SC5-22-2019: Assessing and fostering the impacts of Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) and Innovation Actions (IA) granted by Societal Challenge 5 in 2014-2015. Budget: €600,000.
  • SC5-23-2019: Multi-stakeholder dialogue platform to promote nature-based solutions to societal challenges: follow-up project. Budget: €2 million.

ERA-NET Cofund:

  • SC5-21-2019-2020: ERA-NET Cofund action for climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials. Budget: €4.5 million.

Building a Low-Carbon, Climate Resilient Future: Climate Action in Support of the Paris Agreement

Actions in this call aim to produce solutions for the achievement of the PA's mitigation and adaptation goals, and to further relevant scientific knowledge for the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Actions also support relevant EU policies and objectives, and special consideration will be given to cooperation with strategic partner countries/regions. The following Topics are open under this Call:

RIA Research and Innovation action:

  • LC-CLA-02-2019: Negative emissions and land-use based mitigation assessment. Budget: €22 million.
  • LC-CLA-05-2019: Human dynamics of climate change. Budget: €23 million.
  • LC-CLA-06-2019: Inter-relations between climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services. Budget: €25 million.
  • LC-CLA-07-2019: The changing cryosphere: uncertainties, risks and opportunities. Budget: €39 million.

Coordination and Support Actions:

  • LC-CLA-07-2019: The changing cryosphere: uncertainties, risks and opportunities. Budget: €2 million.

ERA-NET Cofund:

  • LC-CLA-09-2019: ERA-NET Cofund action on biodiversity and climate change: Impacts, feedbacks, and nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Budget: €5 million.
